Combined wear and corrosion duty — where the medium attacks the matrix between the hard carbides, a material chosen on hardness alone fails quickly. Selection follows pH first, abrasion second.

  • A49 (≥600 MPa, HRC43) — low-pH duty at pH ≥4, flue gas and desulphurisation
  • A33 (HRC35) — oxidising slurry at pH ≥1, phosphogypsum and mineral acids
  • A25 (HB300–350) — weldable, allows on-site repair of large castings
  • Rubber and polyurethane wet ends for fine high-concentration slurry
  • Ceramic (silicon carbide) supplied as a separate pump series
  • SMC-R / SMC-M / SMC-U configurations for severe mill circuit duty

Overview

Corrosion and wear together are a harder problem than either alone. A material chosen purely for hardness fails quickly when the medium is acidic, because corrosion attacks the matrix between the hard carbides and the carbides are then lost mechanically. Our anti-wear anti-corrosive grades are formulated for that combined attack, and the selection follows the pH of the medium first and the abrasion second.

Selecting by pH

  • pH 5–12 — A05 high-chrome white iron. The medium is not aggressive enough to require a corrosion-specific grade.
  • pH ≥4 — A49 (≥600 MPa, HRC43). Erosion resistance with corrosion resistance in low-pH service, specifically suited to flue gas and desulphurisation duty.
  • pH ≥1 — A33 (HRC35). For oxidising slurry including phosphogypsum and nitric, sulphuric and phosphoric acid media.
  • Weldable requirement — A25 cast steel (HB300–350), lower hardness but good combined resistance and weldable for repair.

Non-Metallic Options

  • Rubber — wear and corrosion resistant elastomer wet ends for fine, high-concentration slurry without sharp angular particles. Corrosion resistance is inherent rather than dependent on a passive layer, which is an advantage in acidic duty.
  • Polyurethane — for fine abrasive slurry in sliding-wear duty.
  • Ceramic (silicon carbide) — for strong wear combined with corrosion. Ceramic wet ends are supplied as a separate pump series rather than as a liner option in the standard range, because the construction differs.

Mill Circuit and Heavy Wear Configurations

For severe mill circuit duty three wet-end configurations are offered on the high-efficiency range:

ConfigurationLinerCasingImpellerThroatbushFrame plate liner insert
SMC-RThick elastomerDuctile ironMetalMetal or elastomerMetal or elastomer
SMC-MHigh-chrome metalDuctile ironMetalMetalMetal
SMC-UUnlinedHigh-chromeMetalMetalMetal

The unlined SMC-U build puts the wear material in the casing itself, in the same way as a gravel pump, and suits the coarsest and most impact-heavy duty in the range.

What to Send Us

The medium pH and temperature, the particle size distribution and solids concentration, and — most useful of all — the failed part and where it failed. Corrosion-assisted wear leaves a different surface from pure abrasion, and identifying which mechanism dominated usually changes the grade recommendation.

Which grade for desulphurisation duty?

A49. It combines erosion resistance with corrosion resistance at low pH and is specifically applied to flue gas and desulphurisation service at pH ≥4.

What about strong acid media?

A33 for oxidising slurry at pH ≥1, including phosphogypsum and nitric, sulphuric and phosphoric acid media.

Why does high-chrome fail in acidic slurry?

Corrosion attacks the matrix between the hard carbides; the carbides are then lost mechanically. Hardness alone does not address that mechanism.

Is a weldable grade available?

A25 cast steel, HB300–350. Lower hardness but weldable, which allows on-site repair.

When is ceramic the answer?

Where wear and corrosion are both severe. Ceramic wet ends are supplied as a separate pump series because the construction differs from the standard lined range.
