A gravel sand pump is a single-casing, wide-passage centrifugal pump for continuously moving highly abrasive material whose particles are too large for an ordinary slurry pump. Choose it for river-sand mining, sand dredgers, river dredging, and slag transport in mining and smelting; the SGH variant is the high-head option.

Large-Particle & Abrasive Handling

The SG/SGH range moves 36–4320 m³/h against 5–80 m of head at 60–1200 kW, running at 720 / 990 / 1480 / 2960 r/min. Maximum passing particle scales with size — 82 mm on the 6/4, 127 mm on the 8/6, 178 mm on the 10/8, up to 254 mm on the 18/16. Wet-end parts are high-chromium alloy (hard-nickel options on flow parts), and the discharge can be positioned anywhere through 360°.

Frames run 6/4, 8/6, 10/8, 12/10, 14/12, 16/14 and 18/16, coded e.g. 6/4D-SG (inlet/outlet in inches, frame type, SG=gravel / SGH=high-head). Per-frame data, for example, the 8/6E-SG delivers 38–160 L/s at 10–48 m and 50–60% efficiency; the 12/10F-SG delivers 100–420 L/s at 11–58 m. Sealing is packing seal or vice-impeller (expeller) seal.

Both builds pass the same coarse solids and share the same single-casing construction. The head required is what separates them.

Why Single-Casing on Coarse Solids

A lined slurry pump has a replaceable wear shell inside a pressure casing. Gravel pumps do not, and that is deliberate: on material this coarse a liner is broken rather than worn, and once broken the load passes to a shell never designed to carry it. Single-casing construction puts the full wall thickness in wear-resistant metal instead.

Casing and cover are joined by a clamping arrangement rather than a bolted flange, so the discharge rotates through a full 360°. On a dredge or a fixed plant where the pipework geometry is already set, that is what makes the pump fit.

Shaft Sealing — Two Arrangements, Two Limits

  1. Packing seal — seal water pressure must be 35 kPa above the pump outlet pressure.
  2. Expeller seal — backflow head must not exceed 10 % of the pump total head, and shaft power rises by roughly 5 % because the expeller absorbs power.

Wear Material

A22 anti-wear cast steel (1200 MPa, HRC45) for casings; A23 (HB500–600) for high-erosion components; A05 high-chrome white iron (≥HRC62) at pH 5–12. Where a damaged casting cannot leave site, A25 (HB300–350) is weldable and can be repaired in the field — on a remote operation that can be worth more than the last increment of hardness.
