High-chrome white iron is the default wet-end material for heavy-duty slurry service. It resists abrasive wear by presenting a matrix of hard carbides that the particle cannot cut, and it is specified where solids are coarse, angular or arriving with impact energy — the conditions in which an elastomer lining is cut rather than deflected.
Our wear material system covers nine grades, of which four are the high-chrome white irons. Selecting between them is a matter of matching the grade to the wear mechanism and to the pH of the medium, not of choosing the hardest available.

How to Read the Table
- Impact plus abrasion — A05 (KmTBCr27, ≥HRC62). The general-purpose heavy-duty grade, usable from pH 5 to 12.
- Erosion dominant, impact lower — A07 (KmTBCr15Mo, ≥HRC65). The best erosion resistance in the system, but less corrosion-wear resistance than A05.
- Lighter duty — A01 (KmTBCr8, ≥HRC55) at about 0.9 of the erosion resistance of A05, for mud and grout service.
- Machinable requirement — A11 (KmTBMnMo, HRC38–42). Lower hardness, but it can be drilled and tapped, which matters where a component must be modified or mounted.
Hardness Is Not the Only Criterion
A07 is harder than A05 and gives better erosion resistance, yet A05 is the more common selection. The reason is that A05 combines high hardness with a degree of corrosion resistance and greater tensile strength, so it tolerates impact loading and mildly corrosive media better. Specifying purely on hardness produces parts that resist erosion well and then fracture under impact. Where the medium is both abrasive and low-pH, neither grade is correct and the anti-corrosive irons should be used instead.
Components Available in High Chrome
Impeller, volute liner, throatbush, frame plate liner insert, cover plate liner, pump body and cover for single-casing gravel builds, and expeller and expeller ring for dynamic seal arrangements. On gravel pumps the whole casing is cast in wear-resistant metal because there is no separate liner.
Selection
Send the particle size distribution, the solids concentration, the medium pH and temperature, and the wear pattern seen on the parts now fitted. Wear concentrated at the throatbush, at the volute cutwater or evenly around the liner each point to different causes, and the pattern often changes the grade recommendation more than the nominal duty does.

A05, KmTBCr27, ≥HRC62, tensile ≥700 MPa, for higher-impact abrasive wear between pH 5 and 12.
Why not always specify the hardest grade?
A07 is harder and more erosion-resistant, but A05 has greater tensile strength and some corrosion resistance, so it tolerates impact and mildly corrosive media better. Hardness alone produces parts that fracture.
What if the medium is acidic?
High-chrome white irons are not the answer below about pH 4–5. Use A49 for low-pH duty at pH ≥4, or A33 for oxidising slurry at pH ≥1.
Can any grade be machined after casting?
A11 (HRC38–42) can be drilled and tapped. The harder grades cannot be conventionally machined.
Are all grades available for all parts?
No. Grade availability varies by component and pump series — confirm at enquiry.
