Vertical Centrifugal Slurry Pump: Which of Our Three Series, and When Not to Go Vertical

A vertical centrifugal slurry pump works with its wet end submerged in the slurry. Ours come in three series: the SSP in wear-resistant metal, the SSPR with a rubber lining on the submerged parts, and the SZPL with a high chrome alloy cast iron impeller, volute and rear liner plate.

The SSP(R) does not require any shaft seal or shaft seal water, and it can operate under inadequate suction conditions. The SZPL has no shaft seal either, and its bearings are grease lubricated.

Three questions decide it: does your duty suit a vertical pump at all, which of the three series fits, and does the duty sit inside our range?

When a vertical centrifugal slurry pump is the right call

The SSP(R) is a vertical centrifugal slurry pump that works submerged in liquid, built for transporting abrasive, coarse-grained, highly concentrated slurries.

That points to duties where slurry collects in a pit, sump or tank and has to be lifted out, and where you would rather not run a seal water line. If a sealed horizontal pump already serves your plant well, a vertical pump is not automatically better. It is a different layout, chosen for where the slurry sits.

When it is not

On clear water, the SSP(R) duty points we can quote reach 1,089 cubic metres per hour on the 250 mm size and 40 metres of head on the 150 mm size. For the SZPL, also on clear water, the highest flow is 364 cubic metres per hour on the 150SZPL-A35 and the highest head is 45.5 metres on the 80SZPL-A36.

If your duty needs more than that, a horizontal slurry pump is usually the better route, and we will tell you so rather than stretch a vertical pump past its range.

Vertical or submersible?

A submersible slurry pump goes into the slurry motor and all. We cover that route in our mining submersible pump guide. The two layouts suit different sites, so send us the duty and we will tell you which one we would quote.

Our three vertical series side by side

Series Wet end Shaft seal Sizes
SSP Wear-resistant metal None Outlets of 40, 65, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 mm
SSPR Rubber lining on submerged parts None Duty figures for 40, 65 and 100 mm outlets
SZPL High chrome alloy cast iron None; grease-lubricated bearings Seven models in six size designations: 40, 50, 65, 80, 100 and 150

The SSP(R) outlet sizes run from 40 to 300 mm. For the rubber-lined SSPR, we have duty figures for the 40, 65 and 100 mm sizes, so ask us before you plan a larger rubber-lined pump.

SSP or SSPR: metal or rubber

The SSP has all metal parts and is used for transporting abrasive slurry. The SSPR is rubber-protected and is used for transporting acidic abrasive slurry.

Send us your slurry details, including particle size and pH, and we will confirm which wet end suits it. See our rubber-lined vertical slurry pump page.

Where the SZPL fits

The SZPL is a vertical, axial-suction, single-stage, single-suction centrifugal slurry pump. It has no shaft seal, its bearings are grease lubricated, and it can be driven through a coupling or by belt. There are seven models: 40SZPL-A21, 40SZPL-B25, 50SZPL-A20, 65SZPL-A30, 80SZPL-A36, 100SZPL-A34 and 150SZPL-A35.

We cover every SZPL size, flow and head in our guide to a vertical slurry pump without seal water, and on the SZPL product page.

Reading our model numbers

Take 100RV(L)-SSPR. The 100 is the outlet diameter in millimetres, RV is the frame type, L marks the extended length type, and SSPR means the rubber type, where SSP is the metal type. For the 65, 100, 150 and 200 mm outlet sizes, we write the frame codes as 65QV, 100RV, 150SV and 200SV.

Extended length models suit deeper liquid. They add a guide bearing structure, and flushing water is required in the guide bearing area. If you are weighing the extended length against your sump depth, our guide to the vertical sump pump for slurry covers that choice.

Size ranges at a glance

Model Flow (m³/h) Head (m) Speed (r/min)
40PV(L)-SSPR 17.25–39.6 4–26 1000–2200
65QV(L)-SSP 23.4–111 5–29.5 700–1500
65QV(L)-SSPR 22.5–105 5.5–30.5 700–1500
100RV(L)-SSP 54–289 5–35 500–1200
100RV(L)-SSPR 64.8–285 7.5–36 600–1200
150SV(L)-SSP 108–479.16 8.5–40 500–1000
250TV(L)-SSP 261–1089 7.5–33.5 400–750

Figures are for clear water. The 40PV(L)-SSP covers 19.44–43.2 m³/h at 4.5–28.5 m head, and the 200SV(L)-SSP covers 189–891 m³/h at 6.5–37 m head. There is also a 300 mm outlet size, covering 288–1267 m³/h at 6.5–33 m head.

What to send us

To size a pump for your duty, send us flow and head first. Then the slurry type, solids content, particle size and pH, the depth of your sump or tank, and the pump you run now, if any.

Our engineers reply within 24 hours.

FAQ

Do you make vertical slurry pumps above 300 mm outlet?

Our SSP(R) outlet sizes run from 40 to 300 mm. Beyond that, we would look at a horizontal pump for your duty.

Is a rubber-lined vertical pump available in large sizes?

We have SSPR duty figures for the 40, 65 and 100 mm sizes. For anything larger, send us the duty and we will confirm.

How is the SZPL different from the SSP(R)?

The SZPL is a vertical, axial-suction, single-stage, single-suction centrifugal slurry pump with a high chrome alloy cast iron impeller, volute and rear liner plate, grease-lubricated bearings and no shaft seal. The SSP(R) is a submerged pump, built in wear-resistant metal as the SSP or with rubber-lined submerged parts as the SSPR.
