A Vertical Slurry Pump Without Seal Water: What the SZPL Covers

If you are looking for a vertical slurry pump without seal water, the SZPL is built that way. It has no shaft seal, so there is no seal water line to install, pressurise or watch.

On site, that removes a whole system to look after. Our horizontal SZP slurry pumps, by comparison, are sealed with an expeller and packing, packing alone, or a mechanical seal.

With packing, the seal water pressure and flow have to be set for the duty and checked in service. A mechanical seal must never run without seal water, or it will burn out.

The exception is grease-lubricated packing, which runs without seal water. The real comparison, then, is between the SZPL and a pump with a water-fed shaft seal.

Running a vertical slurry pump without seal water

Without a seal, several routine jobs disappear. On our sealed pumps, operators open the seal water before starting, hold it at the set pressure, check leakage at the packing gland, tighten or replace packing as it wears, and keep the water on for 15 minutes after the pump stops. None of that applies to the SZPL.

How much water and labour this saves depends on your plant, so we do not put a single figure on it.

How the SZPL is built

The SZPL is a vertical, axial-suction, single-stage, single-suction centrifugal slurry pump. Its main parts are the impeller, volute, rear liner plate, shaft sleeve, support, support plate, shaft, bearings and bearing housing. The impeller, volute and rear liner plate are high chrome alloy cast iron.

The impeller is threaded onto the shaft. The volute, support and bearing housing are bolted together. The bearings are grease lubricated, and the pump can be driven through a coupling or by belt.

As the drawing shows, the bearings, their oil seal and the oil cup sit at the top, above the mounting plate, while the volute, impeller, rear liner plate and a seal ring sit at the bottom.

The model name tells you the size. In 80SZPL-A36, 80 is the outlet diameter in millimetres, the letter refers to the number of impeller vanes, and 36 is the impeller diameter in centimetres. So the 40SZPL-B25 and the 40SZPL-A21 share a 40 mm outlet but differ in vanes and impeller size.

All motors in the table are 380 V. At 590 r/min the 150SZPL-A35 is belt driven; every other duty listed is direct coupled. At the listed points, efficiency runs from 26.1% on the smallest pumps to 68.1% on the largest.

When the SZPL is not the right pump

Those figures are the limits of the range. If you need an outlet above 150 mm, more than 364 cubic metres per hour, or more than 45.5 metres of head, the SZPL will not do it, and we will point you to a horizontal pump instead.

Our horizontal SZP slurry pumps go up to 350 mm outlets and 2,339 cubic metres per hour, but they have a shaft seal, and with most seal types that means running seal water again.

The SZPL wet end is high chrome. If your slurry calls for rubber, tell us and we will confirm whether this pump suits it. Our SSP(R) submerged pumps are another vertical option that runs with no shaft seal and no shaft seal water.

Can I run a vertical slurry pump without seal water?

Start with the duty. The SZPL covers outlets from 40 to 150 mm, up to 364 cubic metres per hour and up to 45.5 metres of head, with no shaft seal. Our horizontal SZP pumps go to 350 mm and 2,339 cubic metres per hour, and they use a shaft seal.

Direct drive or belt drive?

The SZPL can take either. In the table above, the 150SZPL-A35 at 590 r/min is the belt-driven duty and the rest are direct coupled. Tell us which you prefer when you send the duty.
